Kevin Smith has announced his next "big" project - a follow up to his 1994 directorial debut Clerks. Currently being referred to as Clerks 2: The Passion of the Clerks, the sequel will meet back up with Smith's slacker video and convenience store clerks Randall and Dante ten years later. Undoubtedly fan faves Jay and Silent Bob will return as well, after having had many other adventures in the other "View Askewneverse" flicks Smith has directed.

Smith is of course well known for his Jay and Silent Bob films, which mix a healthy batch of wisdom and life philosophy with fart jokes. Clerks 2 will witness what happens to characters who sit around mocking customers and making comic book and movie references after a decade has passed in their lives. Probably not much growth has gone on, which unfortunately is somewhat true for Smith. By taking on a sequel to Clerks, he most likely has all but removed himself from the potential of directing Green Hornet, which was supposed to be his next project and he is currently scripting. Most likely the bad publicity and big budget of Jersey Girl has scared Smith from straying into unfamiliar territory.

This isn't the first time trying to go back to his roots. Smith explored the world of Clerks in a limited run of comic books, and attempted an extremely short lived animated version of Clerks which Disney's ABC Network canceled after three episodes. While there is no doubt Smith will continue to have a successful career doing what he does best, it's a shame to see the director not stretch himself further. Green Hornet would have been a great chance at taking on something new for Smith. With that said, I personally can't wait to see the further adventures of Dante and Randall.
