Clifton Collins Jr. Joins Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim
Guillermo del Toro seems determined to cast every character actor and up-and-comer you've ever loved in his upcoming movie Pacific Rim, meaning the castin announcements for this movie have been unusually fun to follow. First he brought in Idris Elba, a.k.a. Stringer Bell from The Wire and Heimdall from Thor, to play a lead role that at one point had been intended for Tom Cruise. Then he cast Charlie Day, best known as dimwit Charlie on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, for the actor's most high-profile dramatic role yet. Then rumor had it that Willem Dafoe, that king among kings of character actors, was also up for a role. Was it possible for it to get better than that?
Of course! This is a giant monster movie, after all, and there need to be lots of people to get involved a plot that del Toro himself describes as "Giant fucking monsters against giant fucking robots." Variety now reports that Clifton Collins Jr., he of Star Trek and The Event and a million other things, will also be joining the fight. He's currently making the movie Parker with Jason Statham, which means that Collins will have plenty of opportunity to get his action hero on in the coming year or so. Pacific Rim is set for a release date of July 12, 2012, and goes into production at some point very soon, marking del Toro's first directorial effort, believe it or not, since Hellboy II: The Golden Army. As much great work as he's done as a producer, it's going to be excellent to see him finally back in the director's chair.
