Universal has announced the next interesting George Clooney movie, a film called Leatherheads, is being delayed. Notice I said next “interesting” film. Michael Clayton hits theaters this week, and despite all the thrilling words they use to describe it in the trailers, it’s a tremendous bore.

Set in the mid-twenties, during the early days of the sport, Leatherheads casts George Clooney as a charming football hero trying to save the league from collapse. Renee Zellweger plays a plucky journalist covering Clooney’s character, and The Office’s Jim, John Krasinksi is on Clooney’s team as a player..

Clooney’s football flick is finished and had been slated for a December 7 release this year. But in case you hadn’t heard, George was recently in a motorcycle accident, and while he’s going to be fine it’s thrown a monkey-wrench in his promotional schedule. He’s not running at full steem yet, and so won’t be up to promoting Leatherheads for Universal, since he’s also promoting Michael Clayton and apparently shooting a movie for Focus Features called Burn After Reading. Universal wants his million dollar face out there pushing the movie, so they’re pushing its release back to April 4 of 2008. Hang on to your ticket dollars a few more months if you’ve been looking forward to seeing Clooney with a leather helmet on his head.
