I really enjoyed Cloverfield when it hit theaters, but I’ve quickly realized the movie has little replay value. Once you know the story, there’s really not a ton more to take in. Because of that, all of the talk about a Cloverfield sequel wasn’t something I was too interested in. It’s a cool one-shot story, but why kill it with more of the same?
Matt Reeves, director of Cloverfield, now says plans for a sequel are on hold. He told Collider that the possibility of a sequel would be based on finding a good idea – something as fresh as the concept behind the first movie was. That’s good news, because I was certain we were about to have another Blair Witch situation on our hands. Reeves seems very, very aware of concerns like that, so if a sequel were to come about, it looks like it would be in good hands.
Reeves also talked about his next picture, The Invisible Woman, which he wrote and describes as a Hitchcockian thriller about a woman who turns to a life of crime to save her typical suburbian family. By crime he means bank robbing, so pretty serious stuff. If you know the story, what makes it Hitchcockian? Well, he says it’s a bit of an homage to Marnie conceptually. Expect casting On The Invisible Woman in the next month or so.
