Silly me. I thought when Cloverfield hit theaters the hype would die down. Instead some of the viral marketing, designed to reveal the backstory of the movie, kicked into even higher gears. By the time the movie hit DVD there was still a lot of the origin of the creature that fans didn’t know. That’s slowly ending as more information is revealed, leading some to wonder if the images we’re getting through the campaign is just from the viral game or are hints of a second Cloverfield film.
Several Cloverfield fan sites are featuring several new images from a previously locked directory on one of the Cloverfield viral sites. The images show images from the ocean floor, where the monster came from. Although the monster is hard to make out, the mini parasites aren’t, giving a little more explanation of where the monster originally came from.
To me this looks like more of the viral marketing we’ve seen all along, with no real evidence of this leading to a sequel. I know Matt Reeves is interested in doing more in the Cloverfield world, but the director’s slate is full right now. Still, anytime any strange thing appears online, Cloverfield is mentioned. I guess everyone was so blindsided by the first film, a lot of people are being over-reactionary now just to err on the side of caution. For now I think these just continue the unsolved portions of the first movie’s marketing and aren’t leading us to a sequel quite yet.
Head over to Cloverfield Clues for a good look at the new images and an explanation of exactly what you’re seeing.
