Get ready for some shrunken heads. Chris Columbus (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) is set to direct Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, a biopic based on the eccentric Robert Ripley. With Jim Carrey starring, this movie sounds like it has the potential to be a whole lot of fun, or just a whole lot of craziness.

Sounds like Ripley, himself was a little crazy. If you’ve been to any of his museums, you’d know that. Filled with zany artifacts from Ripley’s world travels, most of the stuff found in the museum is hard to believe. From stuffed mutated animals to pictures of overly flexible foreigners, the museums are creepy and kitschy. Robert Ripley himself traveled the world as an amateur archaeologist in order to write his newspaper column based on the most unbelievable stuff he could find around the world. Many claim that he was a liar, but his facts always checked out and sources were always pristine.

Variety reports that Paramount, the company producing the movie, is hoping for a few sequels out of Believe it or Not. It’s no wonder they grabbed Columbus to direct. He’s directed two of the Harry Potter movies, produced the second Fantastic Four, and is currently producing Night at the Museum 2. This man knows his way around a franchise. Tim Burton was set to direct, but Paramount liked Columbus’ concepts better, so they are in money talks with him right now.

Maybe Jim Carrey is getting back to his over-the-top comedic roots on this one? I guess we will see in 2011!
