Comic Con: Jack Sparrow Fighting Zombies In Pirates 4
The big news from the Disney panel this morning was by far the announcement that Guillermo del Toro will be directing another Haunted Mansion movie-- that took nearly everyone by surprise, and it even managed to overshadow the appearance of one Jack Sparrow. Johnny Depp wasn't on hand this year to make the crowd go wild like he did last time, but appearing on-screen, in 3D and as Jack Sparrow, he created a stir of his own.
And he may have revealed some information about Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Talking about his planned trip to the Fountain of Youth and pretending he's not recruiting a crew, Jack described some of the dangers he would face: "Zombies, cutthroats, mermaids… and Penelope Cruz." Hold up-- zombies? So far as I remember that's the first we've heard of zombies being part of the fourth Pirates film, and I've got to say, I have a hard time imagining how the walking dead will fit into the world of Jack Sparrow and his bunch. Sure, Captain Barbossa and his men were zombies of a sort, but nobody ever used that word to describe them.
So what's the plan here, exactly? Is Jack Sparrow going to be fighting honest-to-God zombies, Dawn of the Dead style, or is there going to be a more Pirates- appropriate twist? Given that the next Pirates wasn't even supposed to be part of this Con, I doubt we'll be learning much more for a while.
UPDATE! A bootleg version of Jack Sparrow's zombie-centric Comic Con announcement has appeared online. Here it is:
