The Counselor, Alvin And The Chipmunks 4, And More Get New Release Dates
Prepare thyselves, for Hollywood is doing some major moving and shaking today with its release calendar. Not only has 20th Century Fox announced new dates for four of their upcoming features, we also have learned when you'll be able to see one of the most talked about films of this year's Sundance Film Festival.
Let's start with Ridley Scott and Cormac McCarthy's The Counselor, shall we? While the film packs an absolutely brilliant all-star cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and more, it was originally set to debut on November 15th, the same day as Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street (a movie that will be targeting the exact same demographics). It was only a matter of time before one of the two projects blinked and switched dates, and it appears that The Counselor has made the move. Fox has now moved the title to October 25th, where it will battle for audience attention with Spike Lee's Oldboy remake and the latest installment of the Paranormal Activity franchise.
The next update is by far the smallest and concerns director Jorge R. Gutierrez's animated love story Book of Life, which is being produced by Guillermo del Toro. The movie is still more than a year away, but Box Office Mojo says that Fox has slightly adjusted it's release date, moving it from October 10, 2014 to October 3, 2014.
The reasoning behind the move can be explained by Fox dating their upcoming adaptation of Frankenstein, which will now be released on October 17, 2014 (Book of Life was move to prevent the two movies from competing with each other). In case you're confused about which of the in-development Frankenstein movies this is (and there are many), this is the one that is being written by Max Landis (Chronicle) and is starring Daniel Radcliffe (as Igor).
The last of Fox's new dates is Alvin and the Chipmunks 4, the follow up to 2011's Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. The film doesn't appear to have a director attached yet, but the studio has slated it to be released on December 11, 2015. It is currently one of only two films slated to be released in that month, the other being Kung Fu Panda 3.
Lastly we come to the Ashton Kutcher-starring JOBS, which is set to be released by Open Road Films. The studio has revealed to Deadline that they are planning to release the film on August 16th - making it a very late addition to this year's summer calendar. The movie will have some pretty stiff competition, as it will be squaring off against both Kick-Ass 2 and Lee Daniels' The Butler. Does it stand a chance? We'll know in about two moths or so.
