Craig Turns Bond Into A Clutz

Alright, maybe all those complaints from obsessive James Bond fans about Daniel Craig being cast as 007 weren’t completely unfounded. Craig it seems, wants to turn Bond into Jaques Clouseau.

Craig says that having Bond make more mistakes in Casino Royale will make him more “exciting”. He tells People Magazine, “I want to make the audience believe that it's all going to go wrong and then when it goes right it's much more exciting,” he says. Wasn’t the cool thing about Bond that he’s always in control?

Craig insists that even though Bond may be more of a bumbler, all the things you like about James will be there. “I'm a Bond fan and I'm focused on making this film. If I go and see a Bond movie there are certain things I think should be in it. And they are. We've got them in spades.” Does anyone else think he’s talking about gadgets and not so much the character? I’m starting to get nervous.

Daniel Craig is an excellent actor, having proven himself with great supporting performances in movies like Road to Perdition. But he’s been an odd choice for Bond since the beginning. This only throws more fuel on the fire raging among crazy Bond fans that he’s doomed the franchise. Of course their reasons have had more to do with the fact that his hair is the wrong color than anything substantial. But now they have something substantial to latch on to.

Daniel insists he won’t let fans down. “Nobody knows more than I do how important this is, and it's my job to get it right.” This is a big opportunity for him, and he’s going to do his best to get it right. This is a younger, earlier version of James, so I guess it make sense that he’ll make more mistakes. I’m just not sure I want to see Bond as the new manager of Fawlty Towers. Hopefully, he won’t take it that far.
