Critics Circle Loves 9/11![]()
Yet another major critics group has announced their list of 2006 award winners. This time it's the prestigious New York Film Critics Circle. They've become the first critics group so far to pick Paul Greengrass's masterful 9/11 movie as the year's best film, while The Queen got the most nods with two awards. One for Best Actress Helen Mirren and Best Screenpay Peter Morgan. Mirren seems to be sweeping the Best Actress award just about everywhere it's giving. At this point she has to be considered a lock to be nominated for an Oscar, if not to win it.
One of their most interesting picks is giving Best Supporting Actor to Jackie Earle Haley. He played a pedophile in Little Children, but he's probably best known as one of the kids from the 1976 movie Bad News Bears, where he played Kelly Leak. He's worked steadly since then with occasional roles on crap television shows like 'The Love Boat' and 'Murder She Wrote' but to from that to serious awards consideration is quite an accomplishment for a former bad boy pitcher all grown up. All it took was a little molesting. Below is the New York Film Critics Circles full list of 2006 award winners: United 93 Best Actor Forest Whitaker, The Last King of Scotland Best Actress Helen Mirren, The Queen Best Director Martin Scorsese, The Departed Best Foreign Film Army of Shadows Best Screenplay Peter Morgan, The Queen Best Supporting Actor Jackie Earle Haley, Little Children Best Supporting Actress Jennifer Hudson, Dreamgirls Best Cinematographer Guillermo Navarro, Pan's Labyrinth Best Non-Fiction Film Deliver Us From Evil Best First Film Ryan Fleck, Half Nelson Best Animated Film Happy Feet |
