It’s been more than 20 years since Duckie worshipped Andie, who loved Blane, who was friends with that rich jackass Steff. A mini-Pretty in Pink reunion is in the works thanks to Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming effort, Shorts. Jon Cryer, who played the geek Duckie, and James Spader, who played douchebag Steff, in the John Hughes teen-classic will both have roles in the family adventure. For those of you who can’t quite remember which Hughes’ movie Pretty in Pink was, it was the one without Long Duck Dong or the girl drummer.
HR notes that in addition to Cryer and Spader, Shorts will feature William H. Macy, Leslie Mann, and Jimmy Bennett. Cryer and Spader made their original splash in films, but have been more focused on television recently. As is the case with most Robert Rodriguez movies, he will be the writer/director/editor/director of photography/composer and may even valet the cars on set.
Despite the presence of some good actors, this movie sort of has Sharkboy and Lava Girl or Spy Kids 3 sound to it. Spader will play the head of corporation that employs everyone in town to make a popular electronic gadget. A boy in the town, whose parents are portrayed by Mann and Cryer, finds a rainbow colored rock that grants wishes. It could be good, like the original Spy Kids, but I’m really not holding out hope. Sorry Duckie.
