Sarah Haskins is the brainy, hilarious star of the Current TV series Target Women, in which she pokes fun at the endless ads demanding that women eat yogurt, buy cleaning supplies, and generally feel bad about themselves until they buy a bunch of ridiculous products.
And Sarah Haskins is also a screenwriter, apparently. She and writing partner Emily Halpern wrote the comedy spec Book Smart, and Natalie Portman's Handsomecharlie Films has picked up the script for development at Fox. Variety actually reported this news a few weeks ago in a profile on Haskins and Halpern, but apparently it beared repeating today
Halpern, Haskins and Portman are all smart Harvard girls, and in the movie they seem to be spoofing their earlier, geeky high school selves. The story is about two high school seniors who realize they've accomplished everything but getting boyfriends, and each resolves to find one before prom. It's a story that could be gross in other hands-- like American Pie, just starring the Allyson Hannigan band geek-- but Halpern and Haskins aren't just smart, they have the Amy Poehler seal of approval. Poehler has them working on a treatment for an adaptation of the Lunch Lady graphic novel, which Poehler will star in for Universal.
Check out a "Target: Women" episode below to get an idea of the kind of sharp humor I'm hoping for here.
