DVD Diggers - 12/19/04

DVD DiggersWelcome to this week’s DVD Diggers - Hail and Well met!

Since we missed last week I’ll just ask: Have you gotten your copy of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King - Extended Edition? I have! In fact it’s sitting on my dining room table staring at me. It calls to me... my precious....

(Aren’t you glad you won’t have to hear any more “precious” jokes, now that the last chapter of the series has come out in its final form?)

Unfortunately while I was able to pick my copy up (the complete gift set for me, with the Symphony bonus DVD and the Minas Tirith statue) it sits unopened as other movies took priority. Can you imagine saying that? That another movie (such as Mary Poppins, Meet the Parents, or even Pizza: The Movie) would take priority over the greatest trilogy of all time? *Sigh* - ah, the life of the DVD critic. :)

You’ll notice we don’t have a review up for RotK yet, but it’s coming. The set is just so massive an undertaking there’s no way to dig through the whole thing for a review in only a week. Besides, given the other two chapters in the series, there’s no way anybody out there is specifically waiting on a review to know whether they should pick it up or not. If you don’t have your copy yet - get thee to the store right now! (or hope Santa is good to you)

Surviving Christmas

Yup, that jolly holiday is less than a week away. If you’re smart, you’ve already finished your Christmas shopping and will sit back this week enjoying holiday entertainment. If you’re like me, you’ll be making the mad dash to the mall each night to finish up what you should have started weeks ago. And then there’s the new category of pathetic - Ben Affleck.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Affleck. I think he does really well in the Kevin Smith movies. Branching out on his own though has been one painful mistake (Pearl Harbor) after another (Jennifer Lopez). This week sees the release of his Surviving Christmas and with a name like that you’d think it would be perfectly placed for the holiday week. Unfortunately it was also well placed for the theaters too, nine weeks ago, making Affleck’s film the quickest turnaround from theaters to DVD (the previous record was held by From Justin to Kelly).

I haven’t seen Surviving Christmas yet, but I don’t plan on it. If a movie was turned around that quickly, most likely it’s not going to be of much worth. Rather than waste my time with a bad bout of Affleck, I’ll be glad my holiday shopping isn’t done, and that my fiancé would rather watch Napoleon Dynamite this week (or better yet, that RotK extended edition).

Happy Holidays to all, regardless of which holiday you’re celebrating.
