Mark my words: Danny McBride is the next big thing in comedy. He’s got all the right connections-- Judd Apatow, Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller—and even his own starring vehicle, The Foot Fist Way. Probably very few people will get to see that movie, which opens in limited release today, but he’ll be all over July’s Tropic Thunder, and plays a key, hilarious part in Pineapple Express come August.
So presumably by the time Your Highness hits theatres, Danny McBride will already be a huge star, and his name will be above the title in giant font on the poster, and people like me will be shouting “Toldja so!” Variety reported today that McBride will star in Your Highness for David Gordon Green, director of Pineapple Express and college friend. McBride wrote the screenplay with Ben Best, who also co-wrote Foot Fist Way and played a role in the movie. See, it’s all just an interconnected bunch of funny guys over here.
The story sounds funny, if completely bizarre. McBride plays a lazy, arrogant prince who must eventually go on a quest to rescue his father’s kingdom from certain destruction. All the usual elements of stories about princes and kingdoms, like fire-breathing dragons and wizards, will be present. Go ahead and give it the catchy description. The Lord of the Rings meets Anchorman? Harry Potter meets Larry the Cable Guy?
OK, all of those mashup descriptions sound awful. But the movie sounds promising, if only because I have infinite faith in Danny McBride after he single-handedly made Foot Fist Way worth watching. Just remember who told you about him first when you join his fan club a year from now.
