Dark Of The Moon Is 2011's Biggest Film But Weakest Transformers Entry
To no one’s surprise, Transformers: Dark of the Moon is already blowing up at the box office. The third entry in Michael Bay’s Transformers has only been out for a day, and it has already earned $37.3 at the Stateside box office. That number is big enough to give it the sixth highest grossing opening Wednesday of all time, but it’s not enough to touch the previous movie Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
Though both Dark of the Moon and Revenge of the Fallen opened on the same number of screens and on a Wednesday around the same time of year, Fallen raked in an insane $62 million on its first day. Box Office Mojo suggests that even the original Transformers outdid this one. Though that film only made $27.5 million on its first day, adjust those 2007 prices for inflation and take out the 3D surcharge being tacked on to many of Dark of the Moon’s tickets and the original outpaced this third installment as well.
Bottom line here, Transformers: Dark of the Moon is doing well, it may end up being the biggest movie of the summer, but there are signs that this franchise may be running out of steam. Or maybe this is just the curse of the 2011 summer, when nothing seems to be performing as well as expected and audiences seem increasingly turned off by the whole 3D thing.
Weakened the Transformers franchise may be, but weaker still is the overall box office, which means Dark of the Moon is officially the 2011 record holder for biggest opening day of the year. With the fourth of July weekend looming, Dark of the Moon stands to make a lot more money before week’s end.
