David Tennant should be in movies. Good movies. In a perfect world his incredible performances in three seasons of Doctor Who would earn him a mantle full of Emmys and the lead in a Hollywood blockbuster of his choice. Instead he’ll play second banana to McLovin in the remake of Fright Night.

The film is lead by already cast Anton Yelchin as a teen who thinks his neighbor, played by Colin Farrell, is a vampire. Toni Collette is Yelchin’s mom who refuses to believe her son’s theory only to fall under the vampire’s spell. That doesn’t leave a lot of room for Christopher Minze-McLovin or Tennant, but as you’d expect Minze-Plasse is playing the best friend role. His character’s name is Evil Ed, and he eventually joins the vamprie’s coven.

So that leaves Tennant with less screen time than he deserves, but at least he’s perfectly cast. According to THR he’ll take on the role originally played by the great Roddy McDowall. In the first Fright Night McDowall was the host of a late night horror show. In the new version the part’s been modified a little to turn the character into a Las Vegas magician who claims to be a vampire expert but turns out to be a fraud. Tennant is a perfect McDowall stand-in, he’ll be brilliant.
