The Doctor, Shaun and the director of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video all working on one project; I’d say those are more than enough reasons to be excited for Burke and Hare. We first got word back in August that Simon Pegg was on board to play one of the titular characters in John Landis’ film and now Twitch reports that his partner in crime will be David Tennant of Doctor Who.
The film is a remake of the 1971 original based on the true story of serial killers William Burke and William Hare known as the West Point murders. In the early 19th century, the only legal cadavers were the bodies of executed criminals. When the number of executions fell and medical science began to boom, there was an extremely high demand for experimental bodies. There was no way the demand could be met – well, legally. Hare’s wife owned a lodging house in Edinburgh in which Burke lived. The two men went from being two good pals to two good businessmen when someone in the home pass away and, rather than burying the body, they sold it to an anatomist. They continued doing so as the sickly tenants passed away, but when nobody else was on the verge of death they took it upon themselves to do the deed and racked up about 16 murders before they were arrested.
The story should make a great feature film and Pegg and Tennant will make an impeccable team. My only concern is with Landis; he hasn’t directed a movie in about 10 years. Since Blue Brothers 2000, he's worked on television projects, most recently three episodes of the show Psych. The guy has talent, let’s just hope it doesn’t take him too long to oil his moviemaking gears and get this film off on the right foot.
