Last week Terry Gilliam hinted that his production of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote might be back on track, although a more careful analysis of what he was saying pretty much revealed fans shouldn’t exactly hold their breaths. Quixote has already been a challenging picture for the former Python (as documented in Lost in La Mancha) but Gilliam might be in jeopardy of yet another obstacle: another film being made about a similar story.
According to Dark Horizons, Andrew Davis, director of The Guardian has announced that his next picture may be a Quixotic tale of sorts. According to Davis he was asked by Quincy Jones to look at Cervantes classic novel and he brought the idea of combining it with his favorite book and film, Tom Jones (not the one pictured here). Davis says the end result is ”a character who believes in the Quixote legend but lives in the London of Tom Jones."
Considering the latest from Gilliam appeared to be more about optimism than fact, fans might have to count Gilliam’s film down for the count. I can’t help but doubt a studio would possibly green light the same film from Gilliam a second time, especially with another version possibly coming to production soon.
