To no one’s surprise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is huge. The film’s Friday box office totals are in and, buoyed in part by $24 million made at midnight screenings, the film earned a massive domestic total $61,150,00 on Friday, its first day of release. That makes it the fifth biggest single opening day of all time, behind Transformers: Revenge of Fallen, The Dark Knight, and two of those pesky Twilight movies.

The record for the biggest single day opening is currently held by Twilight: New Moon with $72 million.

With opening day numbers like that, Deathly Hallows is headed for a big weekend. It won’t beat the current record holder, The Dark Knight’s opening weekend total of $158 million is number one, but Dead Man’s Chest fourth place $135 million seems beatable.

Check back on Cinema Blend Sunday night for full weekend box office totals.
