The numbers are in and hours before it’s actually released, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is already a box office smash. How is that possible? Advance ticket sales.

The days of lining up in front of the movie theater box office to buy tickets are long gone. Those lines in 1999 for The Phantom Menace were the last gasp of a less technologically savvy world. If you’re smart you’ve already gone online and bought tickets for Deathly Hallows, and if you haven’t, well then you’re probably not seeing it because nearly every Friday showing is already sold out.

Advance ticket sales for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 currently account for 96% of all tickets sold on MovieTickets.com, where they say it has already become the number 4 advance ticket sales seller of all time. It lags behind only a couple of Twilight movies and Star Wars: Episode III for the record, and with several hours to go before the movie opens, moving up the list seems entirely within its sights.

Meanwhile Fandango.com reports that with most of the first Potter showings sold out, theater owners are scrambling to add additional showings. They’re even going to be adding 3:15 am showings, to begin right after the first midnights. Why sleep when you could be out watching Harry Potter? Deathly Hallows currently accounts for 97% of all tickets sold on Fandango. You may never see Harry Potter use a computer, but his fans obviously have no problem operating a mouse.
