Del Toro Finds Comic Runoff

By Jason Morgan: 2007-05-29 15:51:00
Del Toro Finds Comic Runoff After delving the depths of Pan’s Labyrinth and getting all geeked out for Hellboy 2, director Guillermo del Toro has set his sights on adapting yet another comic book, “Runoff.” The three volume series by Tom Manning will soon be completed with the recent release of the series’ final volume, but del Toro wants to bring that vision to life on the silver screen, reports the Latino Review.

“Guillermo Del Toro, Nick Nunziata and Lloyd Levin basically contacted me a year ago and we started talking about doing this project together,” Manning told the Latino Review. “It's been moving along in baby steps ever since, but I think that's the way of Hollywood. We haven't worked out contractual details yet, so there are quite a few hoops to jump through before we're rolling any film. I'm not sure where this would fit into Guillermo's schedule, I know he's got his fingers in a lot of projects, but I hope Runoff cuts in line once it's a go.

“I sent them a plot summary of chapter three early on, but I still wasn't sure what they would think of the new book. The ending is a bit...shall we say...un-Hollywood, but that's the ending that was always intended. So when I sent them all preview copies of chapter three, I had my fingers crossed at how they would receive it. Thankfully they all just flipped out over it. Guillermo and Nick both were kind enough to offer to write quotes for the back page, and if I remember right they both told me it was their favorite chapter of the series. So that was a big relief. I guess whenever I am in contact with those guys I'm kind of blown away that they are radical enough to try and take ‘Runoff’ to film.”

Helming another comic book adaptation would definitely be a step backward for del Toro. After finding his directorial stride with Pan’s Labyrinth, comic book movies give him a limited pulp platform to expand his horizons. To date, no director has ever become a better director by working on a comic book-inspired project. Let’s hope that del Toro can buck that trend.

  • Well, Runoff is not much like most comic books. It's more of a psychological thriller with some metaphysical aspects as opposed to a "comic book" movie as traditionally thought. You could describe Pan's labyrinth with similar words. That was part intense violence, part dream state, combining to create a rich and moving piece of art. Runoff's got the same potential, read the books.
