The Departed dominated the awards handed out by the Las Vegas Film Critics Society this week with three wins, but even it couldn’t topple the rampaging juggernaut that is Helen Mirren. She won yet another nod for her performance in The Queen, she might want to start planning that Oscar acceptance speech right now. Still, does anyone else think it’s odd that Las Vegas would be the place to heap the most awards on a movie about the mob?
The Las Vegas Film Critics Society has a more comprehensive set of awards than most other critical organizations. In addition to the usual categories, they honor things like Costume Design and Best DVD Packaging. Outside of Helen Mirren, their winners are also fairly unique. Their winners fall outside the usual stuff being pushed by other organizations.

Beautifully edited. No wasted space and no useless character development that distracts from the essential core of the story. The content is awesome, but the way it was presented was equally superlative. High marks for the role of the psychotherapist. She admits that she lies to keep things on "an even keel."
