Johnny Depp is an amazing actor. Unfortunately, he’s not such a great voice actor. Anybody see Corpse Bride? His voice work wasn’t the only problem with that movie, but it definitely didn’t help.

Johnny however, doesn’t seem to know that he should probably stick with drunken pirates and creepy, candy-pushing pedophiles. Variety says he’s getting back together with Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski to voice the lead character in a computer animated movie called Rango. What a terrible name. It sounds something you’d catch from sticking your finger in an untreated knife wound.

The movie, being funded by Paramount, is about a pet chameleon tossed out of his aquarium into the desert. There he takes off on a journey of self-discovery. Since it’s the desert, normally that would mean having the chameleon injest massive quantities of peyote, ripping his clothes off, and run screaming through the sand in pursuit of some imaginary, naked Indian spirit guide. Sadly, this is a kids’ movie, so don’t expect Depp to play the lizard as an animated version of Raoul Duke. What a pity. Now that’s a movie I might want to see.
