What if in some alternate universe Johnny Depp played Indiana Jones? What that be something that might interest you? Of course it would. Good news, it's happening.

The LA Times says Johnny is set to star in a movie called Rex Mundi, based on a series of graphic novels set in 1933 of an alternate universe where magic is real and Europe is so dominated by the Catholic Church that the Inquisition is still happening. It's like all of Pat Robertson's dreams have come true.

Johnny Depp would play a pathologist investigating the mysterious death of a priest and eventually embarking on a quest for the Holy Grail.

Fight Club screenwriter Jim Uhls has been brought in to adapt the novels into a screenplay. Uhls describes the film as "a noir-ish Raiders of the Lost Ark", so that should give you some idea of the direction he's planning to take it when he starts writing.

With the success of Pirates 3, Johnny Depp is now officially the biggest movie star on the planet. He can do whatever the hell he wants. I'm somewhat surprised that what he wants is to start another massive, big-budget, adventure franchise but then the old Indie-Johnny who once played Ed Wood and a guy with scissors on his hands now seems to be dead. He'd rather hunt treasure, and it looks like he's found it. A film that mixes swashbuckling with the big time moneymaking topic of religion should be a massive hit.
