Devlin Plans To Re-open Stargate![]()
Stargate sticks out in my mind as one of the more enjoyable and entertaining pieces of stand-alone sci-fi filmmaking. It's one of those rare movies that oozes originality and action packed excitement. The film's co-writer and producer Dean Devlin has announced that now, 12 years after its release, he's planning to make two more.
According to a story at Dark Horizons, Devlin's reason for making the films now is that execs at MGM, the studio who owns the rights, think the time is right. Of course they do Dean. After recent financial successes like The Matrix and Pirates of the Caribbean every studio in America is out to find some hit movie to trilogize. "[The studio] thinks there is an audience out there who would like to see what parts two and parts three were intended to be." Wait a minute Dean, didn't you cover that in the two TV series by travelling into outer space and then re-discovering Atlantis? Apparently not. Because there was a larger story arc that we had in mind, and we never got to explore it so I think it will be very exciting to actually get to go do parts two and three." So, there was something larger than irreversibly blowing up the bad guy, setting all the slaves free and lived happily ever after? I dunno. I kind of like where the story ended the first time. The story arc Devlin wants to continue involves the original characters Jack O'Neill and Dr. Daniel Jackson played by Kurt Russell and James Spader respectively. Both actors have expressed an interest in returning. While I really loved the first film and geeked out a bit at the thought of that kind of sci-fi originality coming back for another couple of rounds, I'm still skeptical of all talks sequel if they weren't part of the plan from the beginning (bless you Peter Jackson for doing it right with LOTR). |
