Though the movie musical Rock of Ages boasts a lot of famous names in the supporting cast, including Julianne Hough, Tom Cruise and Mary J. Blige, an unknown has been brought on board to star. According to Variety have struck a deal with Diego Boneta, a Mexican actor and singer, to play Drew Boley, the aspiring rock star who falls for Hough's character while working at a rock club on the Sunset Strip. Adam Shankman, of Hairspray and Bedtime Stories, is directing.

Boneta has appeared on TV's 90210 and Pretty Little Liars and has an ongoing music career, so it seems unlikely he was cast through the open casting call that the producers held in late March. Still, the 21-year-old seems like a good choice-- fresh face, clearly talented, very handsome, and in a time when rumors are flying that Universal avoided casting Oscar Isaac as the new Bourne because he's Latino, seeing the Mexican Boneta snag a major lead role could help tip the scales in a better direction.

Shooting on Rock of Ages starts on May 19, even as Shankman and Justin Theroux finish up their polishes on the script. I'd put my money on a summer release next year.
