Directors Hired To Helm Kyle Killen's Scenic Route
I wish more people had seen Jodie Foster's The Beaver. While the film struggled due to the PR nightmare that is Mel Gibson and a release date that put it in direct competition with Thor, it was actually a great dual-layered story written by Kyle Killen and sported an amazing performance by Anton Yelchin. Hopefully Killen's next project will find more success.
According to Variety, Kevin and Michael Goetz have signed on to direct Scenic Route, the new indie drama written by Killen. The story is about two college students who go on a road trip and end up being stranded in the middle of the desert. As they begin to realize that they may never be rescued, they begin to have heated fights, both emotionally and physically. In addition to The Beaver, which ranked on 2008's Black List (the list of the best unproduced screenplays of any given year), Killen wrote and produced three episodes of the quickly cancelled Fox drama Lone Star and wrote the pilot of the upcoming Jason Isaacs series Awake. The Goetz brothers previously wrote the direct-to-video film Tycus, starring Dennis Hopper.
I've long been a fan of the "bottle" premise - sticking two or more characters in the same environment and not letting them leave - and this sounds like it could be a great one. Killen seems to be a talented writer, but can't seem to get anybody to watch his stuff (The Beaver made only $6 million worldwide on a $21 million budget). Perhaps this will be the project that launches him into real success.
