When did female detectives become so popular? In the past two weeks CBS and NBC launched premieres of Unforgettable and Prime Suspect, and earlier this year it was reported that Miss Marple may return to the big screen. While fads like 3D, dark fairy tales and vampires can be explained by the success of Avatar, Alice In Wonderland, and Twilight, there isn't any precedent to explain why studios are so high on women sleuths. I guess we'll just have to go with the flow, as Disney is apparently developing a movie of their own.

THR has learned that the Mouse House has purchased an untitled screenplay about a female detective. While details are slim, the story centers on a young woman who finds out that "she is the descendant of a legendary detective and is forced to take up the sleuthing mantle." The script was ctreated by newcomer Ashley Bradley and the project will be produced by Marc Guggenheim and his partner, Alisa Tager. Guggenheim's previous credits include Green Lantern, which he co-wrote, and television shows such as Eli Stone and Flashforward, which he executive produced. The article doesn't mention who might direct the project or who is being considered for the lead role.

While I do think it's strange how many projects have come together so quickly, I do like the idea of more female detective movies. Thanks to movies like Kill Bill, Hanna and Colombiana we've seen plenty of female assassins in the last few years, but now we get to see them thinking and not just kicking ass.
