Remember when Will Ferrell made Semi-Pro, and everyone joked about wondering which sport he would make a movie about next? Well those of you who said "synchronized swimming" in-between guffaws were half-right: Disney is planning a movie about synchronized swimming, but Will Ferrell may or may not get involved.
The Hollywood Reporter says that Disney, super-producer Scott Rudin, and, disturbingly, Hannah Montana masterminds Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are all developing the project. The movie, Synchronicity, will follow a pair of male synchronized swimmers, and apparently the party line at Disney is that it'll be Blades of Glory in the water-- The Reporter writes that it will "follow in the steps -- or strokes -- of sports comedies from the likes of Will Ferrell and Ben Stiller."
If I were Disney, I'd watch out. Even though Semi-Pro was reportedly not a half-bad Will Ferrell comedy, it tanked at the box office, indicating that maybe we've realized all these sports parody movies are exactly the same. On the other hand, those Hannah Montana guys seem to be evil geniuses who know what will entertain the younguns, so maybe this will be more than your basic derivative comedy. Honestly, at this point I'd rather have some weird teenybopper movie than something else to tarnish Will Ferrell's reputation. But if Hannah Montana gets cast in this movie somehow, I am staying far, far away.
