We’re still not sure if The Hobbit is actually ever going to be made, but should they ever get any money to make it, there’s a chance Sylvester McCoy will be in it. A few weeks ago we heard that he might be up for the part of Bilbo, and that just didn’t make sense. This is a prequel, Bilbo should be younger, and younger McCoy is not. This makes more sense. He’s actually being considered to play a wizard.

McCoy is probably best known for playing Doctor Who in the late 80s and briefly in the 90s. Doctor Who as a wizard in Middle Earth? It’s so perfect I may go out and paint my car Tardis blue right now. It’s not entirely clear what Wizard part he’ll play, and McCoy says there’s another unnamed actor being considered for the part as well. But I think it’s safe to assume that Ian McKellan is playing Gandalf (unless the production delays even longer) so that really only leaves Radagast the Brown as a possibility for Sylvestry. Radagast is the wizard who got left out of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, a relatively minor character who, if they include him in The Hobbit will probably only have a very minimal role in the story.

Of the three wizards of the Middle Earth: Saruman, Gandalf, and Radagast; Radagast is the weakest. He’s big on communing with animals (his name literally means friend of birds) and can shape-shift into animal form. If you remember the moth that comes to Gandalf when he’s imprisoned by Saruman in the Lord of the Rings films, in theory that moth was Radagast. Now it seems for The Hobbit he may finally take wizard form.
