Twelve seconds. That's the length of the time difference between the American and the Japanese Star Trek Into Darkness teaser trailers, and it equates to exactly one extra scene. But if you're a Star Trek fan you know that one extra scene is actually something very important, and could very well reveal not only the ending of the movie, but the villain as well.
If the message weren't already sent, you should probably stop reading if you want to avoid spoilers. Then again, this is all speculation so who is to say what is real and what isn't. Let's just say tread carefully.
So let's start with the key piece of evidence: the Japanese teaser trailer. You can watch it below or in HD over on Apple.
So the key differences between that trailer and the America version? Benedict Cumberbatch saying "Is there anything you would not do for your family?" and the following image:
Remember what I was saying about Star Trek fans recognizing the scene? While we can't see any faces, that is extremely reminiscent of the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan when Spock sacrifices himself and has a tearful goodbye with Kirk through a pane of glass. Could they be replicating the scene in Star Trek Into Darkness? If that's the case, does that mean that Cumberbatch is playing the role of Khan? The trailer doesn't give the villain a specific identity so it's still very, very possible. Watch the original ending below:
This is all grounds for conversation. Do you think that they will be trying to replicate the end of what most consider to be the best Star Trek movie ever? Do you want Khan to be the film's central villain? Let us know in the comments below.
