Remember that movie Crazy/Beautiful, where Kirsten Dunst played an intriguing girl from the wrong side of the tracks? Well it looks like she’s about to take on pretty much the same role, except this time there’s murder involved. Ooooh…
OK, that’s not exactly fair to All Good Things, the project to which she and Ryan Gosling are now attached, according to Variety. It’s directed by Andrew Jarecki, who made the much-acclaimed documentary Capturing the Friedmans a few years ago and is making his feature debut here. And yes, Miss Dunst is playing a poor little poor girl, but the story seems to skew much more toward being a political thriller and murder mystery than a standard romance. Gosling plays the son of a real estate magnate who falls for Dunst’s character, but when she suddenly disappears he and a detective get wrapped up in a mystery that starts claiming the lives of those closest to the case.
When I read the phrase “down-and-out detective” I immediately wondered if Mark Ruffalo would be cast in the role, thanks to his character in Zodiac. It’ll be interesting to see who really does get cast alongside these two, since Gosling is on the up-and-up now and any actor could probably benefit from starring with him. In general I can take or leave Kirsten Dunst, but the goodwill she earned way back with Drop Dead Gorgeous will let me at least accept her role here. Mostly I’m excited that Jarecki is taking on a feature, since he did such a fascinating job with Capturing the Friedmans. Real estate, romance and politics seem a little far from accusations of pedophilia in Long Island, but who ever said a change of pace was a bad thing?

Jarecki did indeed do a fascinating job with Capturing the Friedmans. All you film editor types out there, take a close look at the scene where the young man was hypnotized. Slow the scene down if you have to. It's fascinating!
