The graphic novel adaptation craze has gotten so widespread that even recent Oscar winners aren't immune. According to THR Warner Bros. has picked up the right to the graphic novel 3 Story, with Milk writer Dustin Lance Black planning to write and direct the adaptation. The material isn't exactly your usual heroes in tight suits with strong morals, but apparently the studio was impressed with Black's sensitive take, and the fact that he's an Oscar winner probably doesn't hurt.

The original novel by Matt Kindt follows the life of a man who grows up to be three stories tall, telling the story from the point of view of the three most important women in his life-- his mother, his wife and his daughter. Black apparently plans to focus on the father-daughter story and ditch the melancholy ending, though it's hard to imagine how a story about a giant doesn't end with tragedy.

If you're worried about the directing skills of a guy who is famous for writing just one screenplay, remember he's technically already made his directorial debut with What's Wrong With Virginia, a drama starring Jennifer Connelly and Emma Roberts that will presumably be released sometime soon. Despite the fact that he looks like he's 18, Black seems like a smart and capable storyteller. And if this movie is as similar to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button as it seems from the outside, maybe this is an opportunity for people to finally get that story right.
