For a few days the buzz online has been that Clint Eastwood's Nelson Mandela movie, filmed under the working title The Human Factor, is now called Invictus. And it's always been assumed that the movie, firing on every Oscar cylinder imaginable, would be plunked down right in the heart of the awards season for maximum impact.

So with that knowledge, nothing in today's Variety piece about the film is news, exactly-- the film is called Invictus, and it will come out on Dec. 11, opposite Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones. But hey, it's good to have these things confirmed. Invictus stars Morgan Freeman-- who else?-- as the South Africa President, who tried to use the 1995 Rugby World Cup to bridge the divide in his country following the end of apartheid. Matt Damon pops in as Francois Pienaar, the captain of the country's rugby team.

And what's up with the title? It comes from the poem "Invictus" by William Ernest Henley, which Mandela has often quoted. "Out of the night that covers me/Black as the Pit from pole to pole/I thank whatever gods may be/For my unconquerable soul." You can read the full text here.
