I’ve been more than critical of the PG-13 horror movie genre – a genre that doesn’t so much pull its punches as just set itself up for a teenage market. The movies are typically weak in plot and have to settle for lots of jumpy moments instead of anything truly horrific. The PG-13 flick may be getting some decent support, though, from one of Hollywood’s most bloody filmmakers.
Eli Roth, the man partially responsible for the “torture porn” genre thanks to the Hostel movies, announced that he’s interested in moving into the realm of the PG-13 rating. ”I feel like I pushed the violence in R movies about as far as I can push it. I feel like I'm bled out. I wanna switch it up.” Instead of blood, Roth has been working on a sci-fi piece that he says was inspired by Cloverfield and Transformers, according to Yahoo! Movies. I have no idea how those movies fit together, but I have no doubt the results will be gigantic (yes, pun intended). Although Roth wouldn’t give more details about the movie, he said he was motivated by an interest in switching things up as well as making movies that 13-year-olds could see instead of the same Rated-R stuff. He also hinted that he wasn’t broken of the gore and bloodshed, however, and that he may film additional violence to include on an unrated DVD. An unrated version of an Eli Roth PG-13 flick? Now there’s an unrated cut that would make a difference. Expect a big announcement next month from Roth with more details on his movie.
