Having seen an actual roller derby match, in which women dress up in amazing costumes and kick each others asses on skates, I'm looking forward immensely to Whip It!, Drew Barrymore's directorial debut set in the world of women's roller derby. And I thought this was a pretty small, low-budget, niche audience kind of thing, but apparently it's big enough to draw USA Today's attention. They've got the first image from the film and a brief interview with Barrymore about what inspired her to step behind the camera at last.
"Everything I've learned throughout my whole life has been going into this piggy bank, and I just smashed it all over the floor for this one," she said. You can see a larger image of the photo above, and more quotes from Barrymore, at USA Today. I like the look of the image in general-- Ellen Page, Barrymore and Kristen Wiig all look great on skates-- even if the costumes seem a little too polished and Hollywood, based on what I've seen. But really, who cares? It's hard to imagine a better girl power movie coming out any time soon, and having Ellen Page back onscreen will be good for all of us.
