Ellen Page To Whip It, Whip It Good?![]()
Excuse me for freaking out, but I’m, well, freaking out. Ellen Page has already solidified her status as Girl Crush 2008, at least for me and many of my friends, and now she’s gone and gotten even cooler. Film School Rejects is reporting a rumor that she may play the lead role in Whip It, Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut about the wild world of roller derby.
Roller derby, you ask? Oh, friends, you are truly missing out. Roller derby is a sport in which two female teams of about six people skate in a circle and, essentially, beat the shit out of each other. There are complicated rules that determine who scores points, mostly about which players pass the other players and how many times they do it. Essentially, though, it’s rugby on wheels—way too complex to follow, but really fun to watch, especially when someone gets an elbow to the face. Roller derby players are pretty much the toughest girls out there, and we all know Ellen Page is wee and adorable, but can you imagine anyone better suited for the role? The movie is based on the novel Derby Girl by Shauna Cross, who also wrote the screenplay. (I will point out now that the book that got Diablo Cody, another first-time screenwriter, her deal was Candy Girl. Cody, of course, went on to write Juno. Coincidence? Probably). Says Cross about the movie, “I just get chills thinking how no one has really captured the sport on film with multi-cameras and great editing. It’s gonna be sick, yo.” I will probably move on to worrying that Ellen Page will be typecast in playing only tough, spunky girl roles, but right now I’m too excited that such roles even exist. Drew Barrymore was hinting at being a girl-power powerhouse a few years ago, what with demanding that Charlie’s Angels get rid of the guns and all. It’s great to hear that she’s stepping behind the camera, though I have no idea of what her directing skill might be. This movie, of course, won’t get made until the WGA strike is over, but I’m going to pretend it’s already in production and get way, way excited in advance. I mean, you heard it from the horse’s mouth: it’s gonna be sick, yo. |
