Eminem Boxing Movie Southpaw May Land Antoine Fuqua As Director image
When Training Day came out in 2001, the sky was the limit for director Antoine Fuqua. Beautifully capturing the dingier parts of Los Angeles and getting an Oscar worthy-performance from Denzel Washington, Fuqua appeared to have incredible potential. Sadly none of his feature films since have been nearly as impressive. So what's a guy to do? How about a boxing movie with Eminem?

The Los Angeles Times reports that Antoine Fuqua is negotiating a deal to direct Southpaw, a boxing film starring the aforementioned Detroit rapper. In order to make the film, the director has dropped out of the Tupac biopic, which he has been attached to for months. The film is about a young boxer on his way to incredible success when he is befallen by tragedy. The script was written by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter and is on track to go into production later this year. The film will be Eminem's first since Curtis Hanson's 8 Mile in 2002.

A boxing movie right be right up Fuqua's alley. After the massive success of The Fighter last year - both at the box office and during awards season - it seems that the public is interested in a pugilist film done right and given the talent involved this might just work. Does it have more potential than a Tupac biopic? Looking at the total gross of Notorious I'd say yes.
