Emma Thompson Cut From Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince

By Josh Tyler: 2008-06-02 04:24:01
Emma Thompson Cut From Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince Whenever a book is translated into a movie, there are casualties. That’s especially been true of the Harry Potter series, where more than one beloved character from the books has failed to make it into the movies. The list of characters who will go missing from the next movie Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is already growing, and it even includes some characters who have already been in the other movies.

Most notably the site Snitchseeker says that Hogwarts Divination professor Sybill Trelawney, played by Emma Thompson in the previous movies, will not be in Half-Blood Prince. They got it straight from Emma Thompson’s agent, and the guys at LR go on to confirm it further saying they’ve heard the same from a studio representative.

Already supposedly cut from this sixth Harry Potter movie are supposed to be characters like Fleur, Bill, Percy, the Gaunts, Trelawney, and Hepzibah Smith. Add Trelawney to the list, and try not to get all whiny when she doesn’t show up in the movie. Books aren’t the same as movies. There will be changes. A round of Harry Potter fan hugs, and you’ll all be able to handle it.

Not a big deal really. She only pops up in snippets in the book and most of those snippets can be addressed in other ways. If you don't cut certain things out, the movie becomes choppy and looses its flow

  1. Laurie Says:

You've got your sourcing wrong. Portkey and Latino Review did not speak to Emma Thompson's rep, SnitchSeeker.com did. Portkey sourced SnitchSeeker in their article. Latino Review did not, even though they got the information and the quote from Thompson's rep from SnitchSeeker.

  1. Chuck Says:

I gave up on getting angry about all the cuts they do. They cut key scenes and characters in the 4 and 5 so why not 6. The amusing part will be in the last movies where people show up in the middle of no where and there is a big discontinuity in the story. They claim year 7 is going to be the full book, no cuts. I don't know how they planned to explain Bill and Fleur's wedding, Dobby, etc... .

  1. Bren Says:

They are cuting the importent characters in the books

  1. ~LV~ Says:

The movies have all gone downhill since the first two. OoP was awful; choppy, incomplete, nothing memorable at all. And now it sounds like they've cut the heart out of HBP as well.
Oh, well, the pictures in my head are so far superior to the movie producers' and directors' efforts, I may just abandon the movies and re-read the books. :)

  1. jessica Says:

    have they cut dobby

  1. ryan Says:

Aw crap, I love the character of Prof. Trelawney so much!

  1. James Says:

Well, Idk... Im like everyone else in that i try not to care anymore... but there is that amazingly brilliant part where Harry and Trelawny are walking down the hall and she lets it slip that Snape was the one who overheard the prophecy... long as they rework the scene and slip that in... Im good

  1. ankur singh Says:

it is not big issue.to make a short and perfect movie of
such a heft novel it must be done and if it is doing so
the film will be come in more compact .

  1. marjorie Says:

The Guants not being in it just pains me. Those characters explain so much of why the family broke down. That hateful father was the worst!!

  1. Kacy Says:

All the movies should have just been done with the lines from the books...honestly half the content of the books are just describing whats going on, whats seen, what noises are heard...all that is in the background of the movie...keep all the characters and all the lines and i guarantee you have a successful movie. And, if its long, who cares!! These cuts really cause so much detail and important information to be lost and insult the spectacularness of the books :(

  1. Hp fan of all Says:

They should'nt cut Fleur Bill Percy Gaunts and Dobby out they r the main part of the story like Bill getting attacked by the WereWolf and Mrs. Weasley Genny and Hermione gitting mad at Fleur and Ron Lovn Fleur. Whos going to bring Harry his breakfast after him and Dumbledore return from Slughorns house. And Dobby and Kreature getting into a fight and Harry and Ron having to separate them. And who is going to help Harry find out what Malfoy is up too other than Kreature. The Gaunts explain what Voldemorts mother had to deal with and I read somewere else that they r still in the movie along with Dobby and Percy who is going to be with the minister and bring them to th Weasleys to see Harry and try and find out what Dumbledore is up too. i dont care about Trelawny much but we do need to know about what Snape did some how and she is the one who revealed it. i think this is a lie because u cant have the HBP without Percy Bill Fluer and expecialy Dobby it would be crazy people who dont have time to read the book but has time to watch a movie should know all about the story so they dont get lost i read the book but people i know hasnt and wants to know all about it so i think its crap if u ask me they should put Trelawny in it at that one spot cause also Harry finds out someone suposedly Malfoy is in the Room of Requirements. they would be crazy to cut all of that out

  1. alice Says:

im not botherd tht much tht they've cut Trelawney all im bothered about is tht they've cut Bill, Fleur, Percy, the Gaunts, and Hepzibah Smith. They all play a big part in the book!!

  1. Heather Says:

I can't believe they cutting out so much important info!, how are the people that have not read the books suppose to understand why things are happening the way they are! And i know movies are expensive to make but to have all the key points in will make it all worth it in the end.

The Gaunt family is especially important in the movie, cos throughout the book they keep referring back to them so Harry is able to understand why Voldermort is the way he is and to find clues in order to destroy him. It frustrates me to see a movie that is so mixed up and different compared to the book, why change something that is already good? And so what if the book is long, the movie should be too, cos there is enough action and suppense in it to keep the audience's attention.
I rate they should keep all the characters in the film.

  1. lil Says:

i went to see OoP with a group of people who have never read the books and ,instead of chatting about the film afterwards all i got was a list of questions form my very confused family about who people were or what was supposed to have happened. My boyfriend said it was like they had just filmed loads of action scenes but forgot to put in the linking story and he was really confused by the whole thing. The film studios cant rely on the idea that everyone seeing the film will have read the books and understand the story. cutting out these fundamental characters ruins the film. they say it is to stream line and tell the story clearly but that is just what they fail to do.

Personally i think that they should never have made the films until the 7th book had been published. it would mean that the overarching stories in each book could have been edited properly. they would have known which story lines were impossible to cut. when i see the other films i just cant help shouting at the screen when they cut out sections that are important later on.

and if the films are too long the cinema can stick an interval in. it worked for the return of the king in my local cinema.

Trelawny doesnt play a huge part, so i can understand. but to me, if they can put Kreacher in, why not Dobby?! if they can animate Kreacher why not spend a little more time and do Dobby too? he is fun to read about and they shouldve kept him in 4 and 5. those who have read 7 know what both characters do, and in my opinion, Dobby does a little more for Harry.

also, my mom has NEVER read a HP book, but absolutely LOVES the films. she said 5 was her fav. you all have to understand that if someone in the movie ind. had just thought this up w/out the books ever being made, they would be heros. ive learned to judge the movies as movies and not get too worked up over cuts. (but bill and fleur seem impossible to cut!)

  1. lydia Says:

gay! why isn't she going to be in it? she's on of my favorite tertiary characters!
    dumb dumb dumb.

i do like the movies though, and am happy to hear that they are making the final book into a 2 movie installment.
    woot.

  1. Dave Says:

Okay, the Gaunts and Hepzibah Smith ... that means all the flashbacks, which are the core of the sixth book... LITERALLY the core, the most important parts, are being cut out?

Plus, one of the Gaunts says "slut". That sucks! Plus, they were badass.

Well, not to worry, the HP movies have sucked ass since #3 anyway. I know they gotta cut stuff, but they need to prioritize badly... they cut necessary things but leave out completely unecessary things (like Grop in movie 5.. wtf?)

They also need to make the movies longer. LOTR was amazing because the director actually liked the books. We need a consistent director who gives a crap about Rowling's material, who doesn't go out of his way to slash it. Why're all the movies 2 hours? These cuts aren't even necessary... HP is the most popular book series in the world, isn't it? Everyone would LOVE to watch a 3 hour HP movie!

  1. nate Says:

not dissapointed at all really. they can work around that character if needed. who ever emma's rep. is he/she is retarted why wouldnt she take that roll?

  1. Hermione Says:

I agree that leaving out the Gaunts is a horrible idea. They really do explain so much of Voldemort's history. I also can't believe they're cutting Trelawney. She's a HUGE part of the story in the long run. She was the one who MADE the prophecy.
I agree with this Dave person ^^
(and for the record it's 'Grawp')
They need people to care about the full story and definitely prioritize what they are cutting. Such important things have been cut in the past or mistaken that are important to the whole story.
Things won't make sense in the end.
I hope these people are miracle workers.....
