Emmerich Remakes Fantastic Voyage

By Josh Tyler: 2007-08-16 05:42:05
Emmerich Remakes Fantastic Voyage Fox is planning a remake of the classic 1966 science fiction film Fantastic Voyage and Variety says they’ve hired Independence Day and Day After Tomorrow director Roland Emmerich to do it.

You remember Fantastic Voyage, and even if you don’t you’ve almost seen the numerous parodies and knockoffs that have been done of it. For instance there’s the rather fun 1987 Dennis Quaid/Martin Short movie Innerspace. Or maybe you saw the Family Guy episode where Stewie shrinks himself, goes inside Peter, and speaks to Peter’s sperm. Or perhaps you saw The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror in which there’s a gratuitous boob shot from Marge. Fantastic Voyage has been parodied and homaged to death, but originally it was a movie about people being shrunk to a microscopic level, shoved in a microscopic submarine, and sent on a journey through the body of a dying scientist. It’s not just fun, it’s educational.

The movie really doesn’t need to be redone, the concept is kind of silly anyway and unlikely to play very well to modern audiences. But since we have all this CGI Fox probably thinks they can update it and make a killing, because that’s worked so well on movies like say, Poseidon. Whoops, no it didn’t.

Emmerich is currently finishing up his next movie, the pre-historic man flick 10,000 B.C.. Even the name is blasphemous, since the Bible makes it pretty clear the Earth is only 6,000 years old. I’ll see you in hell Roland.
