Last week I reported the news that Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes group was eyeing A Nightmare on Elm Street as a possible remake-slash-relaunch of the series. I thought this was a bad idea and speculated that the remake most likely wouldn’t include Robert Englund, who created the iconic figure of Freddy Kreuger, the haunting figure that pervades the original series.
Sure enough, it doesn’t look like Englund has been included in talks about rebooting the franchise. Shock Till You Drop revealed that several sources had contacted them to “shed some light” on the current conversations about Nightmare on Elm Street and that none of the talks included Englund. As I pointed out, this makes sense – the actor is getting up there and wouldn’t necessarily make a convincing killer from beyond the grave anymore – especially if they can pull off a franchise reboot that leads to sequels. It’s damn disappointing news, however.
Englund wasn’t just an actor filling a role. He created Freddy Kreuger – brought him to life a lot more than some figure hiding behind a mask. Reboots on the masked killers like last year’s Halloween proved to be a bad idea, so how does Platinum Dunes intend to reinvent a character that is so solidly attached to one actor in movie culture’s memory? I have no idea, but I don’t like the sound of it one bit.
Englund, on the other hand, is continuing his career without the mantle of Freddy Krueger. The actor is stepping back behind the lens, as announced by Variety. Englund is set to direct The Vij, a dark fantasy story that will star Christopher Lee as a genie-like figure known as “The Father,” who corrupts a priest by leading him to murder as he falls in love with a witch who isn’t what she appears to be. It’s a promising enough of a concept that will hopefully make up for the travesty someone else is creating with the franchise Englund was best known for.
