Eragon Posters Its Dragon

By Josh Tyler: 2006-08-23 00:00:00
The final poster for this winter's new fantasy franchise Eragon is here. Bet most of you hadn't even noticed there was a first.

It's not that Eragon isn't being advertised, it's just that no one seems to care. By this time last year the Narnia hype was already well underway. That translated into huge numbers. Of course Narnia had a built in fanbase courtesy of the books, but then this is supposed to have the same thing going for it. Except... do you know anyone who has actually read the novels? I don't think I've ever even seen one, let alone have met someone who read it.

Eragon, in case you're a little in the dark, is based on the first in a series of fantasy novels written by a kid. They're often compared with the likes of "The Chronicles of Narnia" and "Harry Potter", but I have a hard time buying that some dumb teenager can match up with the likes of C.S. Lewis.

The books are the usual fantasy stuff. A farm boy meets his destiny with the help of a dragon. Actually, that could also be the plot of The Neverending Story. Perhaps not so coincidentally then, the dragon in the poster below looks a bit like a Luck Dragon with wings to me. Click the poster below to see it bigger:

  • i love the movie though haven't read the book but i think i'll enjoy the book
  • INHERITANCE CYCLE = AWESOME
  • Eragon is a thoroughly brilliant book that i would read over and over again. Some people don't know talent when they see it. Sure there may be similarities but the whole plot is based on something completely different. I mean have you got nothing better to do but look up similarities.I love the books can not wait for the next one so pleased that there is going to be a fourth. I realy hope that second film will be made. O and you want to talk about immaturaty just look at your name.
  • i love see the movi i will get it fro my b'day on the 7/6/07
  • Some more similarities between Lord of the Rings and Eragon....

    1. Elves, Humans, Dwarves, all have similar appearances, elves live long, humans live short lives, dwarves are in between...
    2. Urgals = Orcs.....Kull = Uruk-Hai.... the similarities are astouding...there just orcs with horns.
    3. Ra'zac.... = Nazgul (Black Riders)...they have a breath that can paralyze you with fear....they are cloaked in black....they creep people out....they are more powerful than humans, and carry weapons that are unparalled compared with those of humans....not to mention that their both servants of their respective evil kings.

This book got its content from Lord of the Rings and its plot from Star Wars....Tolkien did not take DIRECTLY from mythology....he based his story off of Norse mythology, he recreated it, and it sounded authentic. This author tries to copy Tolkiens work, and fails. His writing is immature, and overly flowering. His dialogue is simply pathetic.

I find it very amusing that most of the people who seem to support Eragon also seem unable to spell correctly...use proper grammar....or know what good writing is...telling me "nah Aragon is best bookz nub, u cant reed" is not going to change my opinion... it makes you sound uneducated, and gives me a realistic impression of your age (8-12).
  • Similarities between Eragon and Lord of the Rings:

    Eragon=Aragorn
    Arya=Arwen
    Eragon loved Arya
    Aragorn loved Arwen
Eragon was a human and Arya was an elf
Aragorn was a human and Arwen was an elf

There are so many other examples but I dont have time to post them
  • Here are the similarities
    1. Both universes have an ancient order whom maintained the peace and protected the weak and possessed paranormal abilities. Dragon Riders = Jedi
    2. Both have ancient orders betrayed and destroyed by one of their own.
    3. Both are farm boys whose uncles are killed by the Empire they eventually oppose. Eragon = Luke Skywalker
    4. Both have the last of an ancient order residing near by who later goes to train them. Brom = Obi-wan Kenobi
    5. Both are the “last” of said ancient order.
    6. Both are the son of a traitor of said order who is also the right hand man of the Emperor. Morzan = Darth Vader
    7. Both travel and join up with a rebellion against the empire. The Varden = The Rebel Alliance
    8. Both are given their father’s sword by their mentor. Luke (Anakin’s Lightsaber) = Eragon (Morzan’s Zar’roc)
    9. Both have siblings that they fight alongside but are unaware that they are siblings. Murtagh = Leia
I haven’t bothered to read Eldest so I don’t know if the similarities extend into Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi. If Paolini had said he was creating a remake of Star Wars- that I could have accepted. Still, I enjoyed the character of Murtagh whose journey I think would have made a much more original story than Eragon’s.
  • there is very little star wars in eragon.

if anything is a rip off, you can say that the author barrows alot about races from tolken, however oddly enough, a good portion of lord of the rings could be consider rip offs of mytholagy. magical rings by dark lords that make you invisible, and have strange and dark influences on the wearer in the effect of clouding and attempting to influence thoughts and actions is not tolkens creation, it is actually based in part on various myths. infact, the whole of it has relations to a norse myth of a dark socerer who makes a magical ring that those all of that.

fantasy however depends on mytholagy, so tolken shouldnt be attacked for it, look at harry potter, mytholagy plays a important part in the story, and alot of it incorporates real world history to add realisem. the books themselves therefore are relatable on more then just a human emotional level, and are filled with symbolisem that comes from previous myths. even the huge reveleation at the end of book6 has obscure mytholgoical references.

the eragon books are a good read, but like every single book on earth, not everyone is going to like it. so its really not a matter of it being the best or worst book ever, but simply whats your taste. it is a series I recommend, as I enjoyed reading it. not my fav book, but it still is intriguing and well planned, and as a fellow writer, I love to see a book where the author knows where they are going in great detail.
  • The books are wonderful .. and in NO WAY are they a star wars rip off .. i grew up on Star Wars (the Real Movies NOT the re-makes) yes it is good vs evil .. but so is most fantasy .. Chris puts a new spin on it .. he is wonderful .. waiting for book 3 .. both my husband and i LOVED Earagon and Eldest .. and have been looking forward to the movies since last year when i first heard about it!

Trust me its worth the read .. and whoever it was that wrote the review "It's not that Eragon isn't being advertised, it's just that no one seems to care. " .. Dont write what you do not know .. Chris's fan base may not be the size of Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings or even Narnia .. but there IS a good size Fan base. and your wrong they are NOT advertising it as much as they did for Narnia or any of the others i mentioned!
  • If you haven't read the books, you should. They are excellent. Christopher Paoulini is anything BUT a "dumb kid". I have been looking forward to this film coming out since I first heard about it, which was about September last year!! Read them, you could do worse.
  • Eragon is a bit of a rip-off but it could still be fun and exciting ... especially as a movie ...

Like Christopher Paolini (author of Eragon), other young fantasy authorS - twin brothers - caught my attention lately: http://www.twins.guptara.net

The poster could have been better...
  • I read both of the books and I loved them!! I can't wait to see the movie!!!!
  • Who knows if I'll actually like it or not but I'm sure I'll see it because I'm a sucker for Dragons. My brother read the books and liked them. I browsed over them a bit but never actually sat down and commited besides be a blatant Star Wars rip-off the books didn't seem all together bad.
  • Looks like Dungeons & Dragons: Part 2 to me. :(
