The fate of the Star Wars nerds who break into Skywalker Ranch in Fanboys is yet to be determined, but in the meantime, that movie’s writer Ernie Cline is moving on to a different set of geeks. And in case any of the Star Wars fanatics feel abandoned, don’t worry! You’re probably included within this group too.
Variety reports that Lakeshore Entertainment will produce Cline’s screenplay Thundercade, about a middle-aged video game geek whose world record in gaming has been beaten by some young upstart—probably a kid who doesn’t even remember the original Legend of Zelda! The older guy and his friends quit their jobs and train to go to Thundercade, “the world’s ultimate gaming championship.”
So basically what you’re telling me is that the kid from The Wizard has grown up and even the magic glove can’t help him now? OK, given that Cline wrote a movie as beloved as Fanboys, I give him credit to be more original than that. But wouldn’t it be great if Nintendo completely underwrote this one as well, and used it to introduce, I don’t know, the Wii that plugs directly into your brain?
Old-school video gamers had their day in the sun last year with the documentary The King of Kong, and Cline seems to be once again working with familiar territory. All in all, I say great. Then again, I’m such an inexperienced gamer that I can’t name half the characters on MarioKart (seriously, why is one them a plant?), so for all I know the video gamers hate the Star Wars geek and I’ve just stepped into a turf war. Can’t we all just get along and play some Wii in the meantime?
