When someone says “Ben Stiller and Jack Black” the mind instantly wanders to the comedy gold they mined in Envy. That movie suffered a critical drubbing but compensated for it by being a box-office bomb. Not content to rest on their laurels, though, the duo will reunite, according to Production Weekly , in Tropic Thunder.
Stiller will direct the comedy starring Black, Robert Downey Jr., Jay Baruchel (he played the main character in the under appreciated 'Undeclared'), and Stiller himself. They play a group of actors who have to become commandos in real life while filming a big budget war movie. Black will stretch himself by portraying a character named “Fats.” Fats is an overweight drug addicted comedian who must kick the habit while on location. Downey plays a highly regarded actor and Baruchel plays an unknown.
The picture was written by Etan (don’t confuse me with the guy who writes and directs movies with his brother) Cohen and Justin Theroux. Cohen co-wrote the screenplay for Idiocracy and Theroux is an actor who hasn’t had a screenplay produced, yet. While the cast looks mildly promising, I’m 75% sure this movie will suck. It’s just a feeling, and I’m going to go with it. Check back in 2008 to see if I’m wrong.
