Fernando Meirelles Planning A Biopic About Aristotle Onassis![]()
There are a lot of interesting biopics swirling around in the pre-production stage right now, with Spielberg finally moving forward on his Lincoln movie, a Jackie Robinson biopic taking shape, and hey, maybe Paul Greengrass will find another backer for his Martin Luther King movie even though Universal recently pulled away from making it.
Now add another fascinating life story on its way to the screen, and this one might be the most interesting of all. According to Vulture, City of God and The Constant Gardener director Fernando Meirelles is reteaming with City of God writer Braulio Mantovani to make Onassis, a biopic about the Greek shipping magnate who married Jacqueline Kennedy after the President was shot and, oh, might have financed Bobby Kennedy's assassination. And you thought your second marriage was tricky! The film is getting financing from France's Pathe, which means it might not be victim to the same studio skittishness that killed Greengrass's MLK film, and Meirelles imagines it as "a sort of Godfather, with Onassis as the center." Someone tell me the Greek word for "sold" so I can properly express enthusiasm for this project. |
