Will Ferrell To Receive The First Comedic Genius Award At The 2013 MTV Movie Awards
With the Oscars done, we can now look forward to that other major movie awards ceremony. I am, of course, referring to The 2013 MTV Movie Awards, which will be hosted, this year, by Pitch Perfect's Rebel Wilson. MTV made the announcement today that they will be honoring Will Ferrell with the "Comedic Genius Award."
If ever there's a movie award show that showcases some of the lesser celebrated - at awards shows, anyway - comedies, it's the MTV Movie Awards. And Will Ferrell is something of a rock star at the event, so it seems only fitting that if MTV wants to celebrate a modern-day "comedic genius," the Anchorman star should be among the first to receive the prize.
The accolade was created to honor an actor who has not only provided a major influence through their work but also transformed the genre. From his seven-year tenure on “Saturday Night Live” to playing Ron Burgundy in “Anchorman” to the title character in “Elf” and Frank the Tank in “Old School,” Ferrell’s comedic chops are nothing short of genius.
If not Ferrell, I'd think Jim Carrey, Eddie Murphy and Adam Sandler might be good contenders for an award like this, but Ferrell seems like a great place to start, considering his contributions to comedy over the years.
MTV also announced that they'll be making an event out of revealing this year's nominees. Much in the way the Grammy Awards have turned the nomination reveal into its own occasion, MTV will air 2013 MTV Movie Awards Nominations Spectacular on Tuesday, March 5 at 8:00 p.m. ET. Josh Horowitz and Rebel Wilson will be on hand to announce the "Movie of the Year" nominees, after which a 30-minute live stream will take place at MTV.com, where nominees for some of the other categories will be revealed, including "Best Kiss," "Best Fight" and new categories, including "Best Shirtless Performance" and "Best Musical Moment." Afterward, fans will be able to vote for their picks at MovieAwards.MTV.com.
