In the Event of a Moon Disaster not surprisingly will present the audience with exactly that--a disaster that takes place in outer space. The film (penned by Mike Jones, the writer of the upcoming Popeye reboot) heads back to 1969 to the first landing of an American on the moon and presumes to change history in that the astronauts involved will experience a problem and will then face “insurmountable odds” during the rest of the film. Transformers 3 took this approach, and, similarly, the upcoming Apollo 18 will bend the reality of the moon landings.

Whether or not these odds will be inflated by problems with the lander or with an alien presence hell bent on destroying two moon walkers we can’t be sure. Details are incredibly slim right now as the film was only just recently picked up by FilmNation, the team behind the upcoming remake of the Michael Cane classic Gambit, Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli’s next outing, and the much anticipated Red Dawn rehash.

According to Deadline, Jones has also been at Pixar working with Coraline director Henry Selick on an untitled project. We probably won’t hear anything about it at least until Brave gets released, and maybe not even for some time after that as Monsters University is next on deck for Pixar in 2012. Hopefully that project and In the Event of a Moon Disaster will take Jones away from the Popeye reboot that would be better to just be forgotten about. We don’t need another Smurfs on our hands.
