This is incredible. I’ve never been a Harry Potter fan and I probably never will be. I’ve only really loved one of the movies (Azkaban) and usually the trailers for them do very little for me. But not this time.

The first ever trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 has arrived and it’s like no other Potter trailer you’ve seen before. It’s epic. It’s heroic. The music is huge, different, changed. It feels for all the world like I’m watching the trailer for a Peter Jackson directed Lord of the Rings movie, except with a lot of Potter stuff in it. Coming from me, that’s just about the highest compliment I can pay it.

For all its eye-popping explosions and magic and sweeping wide angles, my favorite shot of this trailer is this one of Voldemort, walking across seemingly dead bodies in his bare feet. Ok maybe I’m not a big fan of the snake, which is obvious CGI, but that shot, letting us see his bare, dirty feet slapping on the floor, stepping over corpses… that’s subtly brilliant in a way these Potter movies so rarely are.
