The upcoming drama The Book of Eli has basically been sold on one concept-- Denzel Washington saving the world. You don't really need a visual to go along with that, given that we've seen variations on it in plenty of films, but the first image from the movie confirms pretty much what we've expected all along: Denzel Washington is the savior we need.

In the image, provided by Entertainment Weekly, Washington is boldly wearing his sunglasses indoors and looking a little rough for the wear. Hey, when you're a hero traveling the country in search of a mystical book, you probably don't have a lot of time for showers. Apparently he's just arrived at a bar that, in this post-apocalyptic world, isn't exactly serving top-shelf liquor. "'They peddle some nasty, prison-type alcohol — whatever you can make in the future when there's nothing left,'' said co-director Allen Hughes.

Even though The Book of Eli is scheduled for a Jan. 15 release date-- a sign it may be less than great-- I remain optimistic. Mostly because when the world goes all to hell, I'll hope Denzel Washington is there to rescue me.
