Agents Mulder and Scully are back, and USA Today has your first look at the duo’s return. We’re talking, of course, about this year’s sequel, The X-Files 2, which hits theaters July 25th and brings back the characters after a five year absence.

Along with the first look at the characters, which really haven’t changed much in those five years, the paper’s article reinforces what we’ve been told by creator Chris Carter all along: this is a stand-alone movie. Don’t expect a continuation of the long lasting “mythology” plotline about aliens living among our culture. That story was wrapped up as the series concluded. Instead, The X-Files 2 is a one-shot that won’t be continuing old stories or setting any kind of new franchise – a smart move in order to make the movie accessible to a wider audience base.
